Elon Musk’s xAI has been openly condemned by top artificial intelligence experts from OpenAI and Anthropic, who have called its safety culture “reckless” and “completely irresponsible.”
These harsh criticisms follow xAI’s release of Grok 4, their most recent AI chatbot, without what these experts believe to be necessary internal assessments or safety documentation.
The worries were particularly expressed by Boaz Barak, a professor of computer science who is now on leave from Harvard to work at OpenAI on safety research.
Barak said on X (previously Twitter) that xAI released Grok 4 “without any documentation of their safety testing,” disregarding industry standards for openness.
He underlined that his critique was directed at responsible AI development rather than competition: “I appreciate the scientists and engineers @xai but the way safety was handled is completely irresponsible.”

The choice by xAI to not provide a safety assessment was also criticized by Samuel Marks, an AI safety researcher with Anthropic, who described the action as “reckless.”
“Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google’s release practices have issues,” Marks wrote in a post on X. “But they at least do something, anything, to assess safety pre-deployment and document findings. xAI does not.”
According to a post on X by Dan Hendrycks, director of the Center for AI Safety and xAI’s safety adviser, the company conducted “dangerous capability evaluations” on Grok 4. The findings of such assessments, however, have not been made public.
“It concerns me when standard safety practices aren’t upheld across the AI industry, like publishing the results of dangerous capability evaluations,” said Steven Adler, an independent AI researcher who previously led safety teams at OpenAI, in a statement to TechCrunch. “Governments and the public deserve to know how AI companies are handling the risks of the very powerful systems they say they’re building.”
