Grammy Award-winning Nigerian singer and songwriter Temilade Openiyi, better known by her stage name Tems, has reached a significant career milestone by becoming the first female African artist to reach one billion streams on Spotify.
Her collaboration with American rapper Future and Canadian superstar Drake on the worldwide hit tune “Wait For U” was a major factor in this remarkable accomplishment.
Tems earned Spotify’s exclusive “Billions Club” medal in honor of this historic achievement, which places the ‘Damages’ crooner in a limited group of African artistes.

This unique honor by Spotify glorifies musicians whose songs have received over a billion platform plays, demonstrating their enduring appeal and widespread reach.
The song “Wait For U,” which was published in May 2022, gained immediate popularity. It peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and won Tems her first Grammy Award in 2023 for Best Melodic Rap Performance.
In addition to putting her in the public eye worldwide, this achievement made her the first African performer to debut at the top of the coveted Billboard chart.
