Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has urged the Super Falcons to go all out for victory as they face hosts Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) today, July 26.
The WAFCON final will be played at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, with kick-off scheduled for 9 PM Nigerian time.
Head coach Justin Madugu’s team is on the verge of winning a record-extending 10th WAFCON title. The Super Falcons have already secured four wins and one draw in this year’s edition of the tournament. They have scored 11 goals and conceded just once en route to the final.
In a short video posted on the team’s official X account, the First Lady praised the players and officials for their performance so far and encouraged them to finish the tournament on a high.
“My beautiful and lovely Super Falcons, I congratulate you and the officials for the qualification for the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations,” she said.
“I commend your team spirit, determination, and professionalism demonstrated in all your matches so far. You are shining examples to girls in Nigeria and Africa.
“As you step out for the final match, I pray God crowns your efforts with resounding victory. Make us proud, our worthy ambassadors and champions. Nigerians and I are waiting to receive you with a trophy in your hands.”
The Super Falcons opened their campaign with wins over Tunisia and Botswana, followed by a draw against Algeria. They then defeated Zambia 5-0 in the quarter-finals and overcame South Africa 2-1 in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Super Falcons forward Francisca Ordega remains a doubt for the WAFCON final after sustaining an injury in training before the semi-final against South Africa. The Al-Ittihad Ladies player missed that match and has not resumed full training.
Ordega has made only one appearance in the competition so far and is aiming to win her fifth WAFCON title with Nigeria.
The final marks a rematch of the 2022 semi-final, where Morocco defeated Nigeria on penalties.
