The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has named its newly inaugurated convocation arena after the minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

The Nyesom Wike Convocation Arena was officially unveiled yesterday by the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (rtd) as part of events marking the institution’s 35th combined convocation ceremony and 50th anniversary.

Speaking at the event, the vice-chancellor of UNIPORT, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, recounted the university’s humble beginnings, noting that its first convocation in 1982 was held in the old arena.

“Today, we are proud to celebrate our 35th convocation in our 50th year of existence in this magnificent edifice, built by the Rivers State government under Wike’s administration,” he said.

Ibas commended Wike’s contributions to the institution, describing the project as a reflection of his commitment to infrastructural and educational development.

“This ultra-modern convocation arena stands as a testament to what is possible when vision meets dedication. Your Excellency, we honour your foresight.

“This arena is not just a venue for graduations, it is a sanctuary where dreams are validated, academic journeys culminate in triumph, and future leaders are celebrated.

“It will host policy dialogues, innovation exhibitions, and ceremonies that will shape generations to come,” he said.

Wike, who was also conferred with an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Political Science (D.Sc Honoris Causa), expressed deep appreciation for the recognition.

“My wife, my entire family, and I hold this honour in the highest regard. Our gratitude knows no bounds,” he said.
