Former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, has stated that he is not aware of reported plans by President Bola Tinubu to drop Senator Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 elections.
The former Governor insisted that he was just hearing the news for the first time when the interviewer, Seun Okinbaloye, asked him for a reaction.
Naija News reports he made the remark on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
“When you were hearing that there’s a possibility of Senator Kashim Shettima being dropped, did that make you sad?” Senator Ali Modu Sheriff was asked during the programme, and in response, he said, “Honestly, I haven’t heard it.”
Okinbaloye pressed further and reminded him of the chaos that happened during an All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders meeting in Gombe State, in which Shettima was not endorsed for 2027, but Sheriff said he was present in Gombe, and that was not exactly what transpired.
Senator Sheriff submitted that only some younger members of the party were disgruntled during the Gombe programme.
“It’s just some younger members of the political party who were angry because Vice President Kashim Shettima’s name was not mentioned and I don’t think that has called for any rowdiness because the same exercise has taken place in Abuja, in our national headquarters,” he said.
The former Governor, however, insisted that President Tinubu reserves the exclusive right to pick whoever he wants as his running mate for the 2027 election, and nobody can dictate to him.
“The President has exclusive right (to choose) who becomes his running mate any day, any time, because the way he picked him as his running mate, he wants to pick him again, he will pick him. So it’s not for people to tell the President what he wants to do or what he will do or should not do,” Sheriff added.
