Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has dissolved the State Executive Council and appointed a new Chief of Staff.
The decision was made public at the end of the State Executive Council meeting held in Makurdi on Wednesday.
Announcing the development, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Tersoo Kula, revealed that the governor appreciated the efforts of all outgoing commissioners who served with him for the past two years.
“This is not a political purge. It’s a strategic reorganisation to bring in new perspectives that align with the governor’s long-term development vision,” Kula said.
Governor Alia urged those who might not return to continue working with the administration through the party structure.
“This move is to allow others also contribute their quota to the growth and development of the state,” he said.
“We are grateful for the service rendered by each commissioner, but governance is a continuous process that requires new energy and renewed commitment.”
Alongside the dissolution, the governor named Mr. Moses Atagher, a former acting Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank (FMB), as the new Chief of Staff.
“Mr. Atagher’s experience in public service and his track record in financial institutions make him the right fit for this critical role,” Alia added.
In his brief remarks, Atagher expressed gratitude to the governor for the opportunity.
“I am honoured by the governor’s trust. I promise to work diligently to advance the goals of this administration and support the people of Benue State in every possible way,” he said.
In his farewell remarks, the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Bemsen Mnyim, who spoke on behalf of the dismissed officials, expressed gratitude to the governor for the opportunity to serve.
“At every stage in life, everywhere you are called to serve is a school. We have learnt a lot while working with you, sir,” Mnyim said.
“Even though we may not all return, we leave with pride, having contributed meaningfully to the growth of our dear state.”
Another outgoing commissioner, who pleaded anonymity, also commented:
“The governor has his reasons, and we respect that. It’s all about Benue first. I’m proud of the work we’ve done, and I remain committed to the administration.”
The sacked commissioners were directed to immediately hand over all official documents and responsibilities to the Permanent Secretaries of their respective ministries.
According to a senior party official who reacted to the shake-up, “The dissolution shows that Governor Alia is serious about performance and accountability. It sets a tone for the second half of his tenure.”
