The Anambra State Police Command has arrested 24-year-old Somtochukwu Nwafor in connection with the gruesome m^rder of a pregnant nurse in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area.

The suspect, alleged to be the girlfriend of the prime suspect, was apprehended following a raid on a shrine where human remains were recovered, intensifying the investigation into the shocking crime.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit acted on credible intelligence to raid a criminal hideout in Ogbunike on July 28, 2025.

During the operation, Nwafor was arrested, and items recovered included human parts believed to be linked to the m^rder of the nurse, whose identity has not been disclosed. Preliminary investigations suggest the victim was brutally k!lled, with her body mutilated, sparking outrage across the state.

The police spokesperson revealed that Nwafor confessed to being an accomplice in the crime during interrogation, providing details that have aided ongoing efforts to apprehend other suspects.

“The suspect is in custody, and investigations are progressing to unravel the full circumstances of this heinous act,” Ikenga stated, adding that the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has ordered a thorough probe to ensure justice is served.

The m^rder has drawn widespread condemnation, with residents and community leaders describing it as a barbaric act.

The Anambra State Government, through a statement, vowed to support security agencies in bringing all perpetrators to book.

While the motive behind the nurse’s murder remains under investigation, sources suggest it may be linked to ritualistic activities, given the recovery of human remains at the shrine.

The police have called on the public to provide information that could assist in the investigation, assuring confidentiality.

The case has also prompted renewed calls for enhanced security measures and community vigilance to prevent such atrocities. As investigations continue, the victim’s family and colleagues at the health facility where she worked have expressed grief and demanded justice.
