Olympics: President Tinubu Reacts As D'Tigress Coach, Wakama Emerges Best Coach Of Women's Basketball

Head coach of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, Rena Wakama, has charged her players to remain focused and committed as they prepare to face Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.

The match is scheduled to take place today, July 31, at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, with tip-off set for 10 p.m. Nigerian time.

Speaking ahead of the knockout fixture, Wakama emphasised the importance of staying disciplined and improving on previous performances.

“This is the business end of the tournament, and as a team, we know what is at stake and we are following through on our set goals with each game,” Wakama said.

D’Tigress go into the encounter with a perfect record, having defeated Rwanda 92-45 and edged Mozambique 65-60 in the group stage. Their opponents, Cameroon, also remain unbeaten and sealed their spot in the quarter-finals with an 85-64 win over Angola.

Nigeria, four-time defending champions, are aiming to make history by becoming the first team to win five consecutive Women’s AfroBasket titles.

Wakama’s side have maintained an unbeaten run spanning the last four editions of the tournament and are seen as strong favourites to retain the title.

A win against Cameroon would secure D’Tigress a place in the semi-finals and move them one step closer to extending their dominance in African women’s basketball.
