When the PDP in Enugu State magically threw up fictitious figures in Owo and few communities in Nkanu East local government during the 2023 Gubernatorial election, and got declared as the winner of the election; PDP in Enugu State was thrown into frenzy, jubilating that they managed to secure another mandate after a disastrous outing by the former administration, little did they know that their joy will be short lived.
On 29th May 2023, the dance steps changed following the swearing in of Peter Mbah as the governor of the state who decided to run the state like the Lord of the Manor. Out of anger and frustration, he dismantled the political structure that brought him into power citing that he became a governor through his might and financial muscle, a threat he made valid by sidelining almost all the political players in his appointments.
The people of Enugu took this with a pinch of salt thinking that the governor intends to pilot the state to greater heights having made bogus promises during his campaign so he wouldn’t want anyone to derail his plans for the the state.
The reality started dawning on Ndi Enugu when he failed to deliver water to Ndi Enugu in 180 days, a promise he used as an anthem during his campaign and no explanation was given for such deception. Same goes for everything in his administration because he kept all matured and experienced hands away to avoid being questioned.
The governor of Enugu also went on overdrive when he brought President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Enugu in February 2025 to commission uncompleted Smart School Projects whereas he completed only the one in his Owo ward as against 260 proposed Smart Schools.
The Governor in his attempt to silence opposition in the state, won the Governorship candidate of Labor Party in the 2023 election Hon. Chijioke Edeoga into the PDP fold in an attempt to seal d lips of opposition in Enugu state, little did he know that APC in Enugu State was already regenerating.
The APC in Enugu State led by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology Chief Uche Nnaji and Barrister Ugochukwu Agballa started gaining momentum with the defection of serving House of Representative members and other political bigwigs across the state. The leadership style of Chief Nnaji has made the APC in Enugu State the cynosure of all political watchers and because Ndi Enugu have started asking questions, Gov Mbah’s next move is to join the APC being the only opposing voice in the state since he’s succeeded in dismantling the PDP that brought him to power.
Question on the lips of every politically informed individual in Enugu today is “Why the desperate push by the Governor to join the APC”. Will moving to APC cut down the harsh tax regime that has impoverished businesses in Enugu State or fix the poor security situation in the state?
The exit of political players and observers from PDP in Enugu state is simply enough to explain that all is not well with the ruling party in Enugu State and it’s the duty of the governor to fix his home instead of looking for a safe haven. All Ndi Enugu wants is effective and transparent leadership, not political gerrymandering.
