In a statement posted on the party’s official X handle, the SDP clarified its leadership status amidst internal disagreements, stressing that the electoral commission has maintained a clear and consistent stance on the matter.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has continued to maintain a clear and consistent position regarding the ongoing leadership issues within our great party, the Social Democratic Party (SDP),” the statement read.
Highlighting INEC’s statutory role in overseeing party affairs, the SDP stated, “As the constitutionally empowered body responsible for the registration, regulation, and oversight of political parties in Nigeria, INEC has remained steadfast in ensuring that all political parties adhere strictly to constitutional provisions and statutory requirements.”
The party went on to reaffirm Gabam’s status, calling for all members and stakeholders to respect the established structure.
“We therefore wish to unequivocally inform all loyal members, supporters of the SDP across the country, and the general public that His Excellency, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam (Makaman Tilde) remains the duly elected National Chairman of the SDP, as recognized by INEC.”
In reinforcing Gabam’s authority, the SDP emphasized that all official communications must come through him:
“All official communications, directives, or correspondences of the party must be duly signed by him to be considered valid and binding. We urge everyone to be properly guided in this regard.”
“In conclusion, we sincerely appreciate INEC and all security agencies across the country for their professionalism and unwavering commitment to upholding democratic principles and the rule of law.”
