Media entrepreneur and former presidential candidate, Dele Momodu, has disclosed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had a gentleman’s agreement with former President Olusegun Obasanjo to succeed him after their first term in office, which began in 1999.

Momodu, a prominent voice within Nigeria’s opposition political space, made the revelation in an article published on his Facebook page on Friday. According to him, the informal understanding between the two leaders was that Atiku would take over the presidency after Obasanjo’s initial four-year tenure. However, the alleged agreement did not materialise.

“The deal was that he would take over after their first term in office, but it fell through despite the humongous support from the majority of the governors,” Momodu wrote.

He further alleged that following the breakdown of the agreement, Obasanjo gradually stripped Atiku of key constitutional roles and influence, effectively isolating him during their second term in office (2003–2007).

Despite the political betrayal, Momodu praised Atiku’s restraint, describing his response to the fallout as one of “uncommon equanimity.”

Atiku served as Vice President from 1999 to 2007 and has remained a recurring figure in Nigeria’s presidential politics, contesting multiple times under various party platforms. In the most recent 2023 general elections, he emerged as the runner-up behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Momodu also commended Atiku’s post-office achievements, portraying him as a figure of business success and political resilience.

“He is a man with the Midas touch and has his fingers in many fruitful pies,” Momodu wrote, contrasting Atiku with some of his contemporaries who, according to him, remain financially and politically dependent on public office.
