The Super Falcons triumphed over hosts Morocco 3-2 on Saturday, 26th July, pulling off a spirited comeback to secure their record-extending 10th WAFCON title. Morocco surged into a 2-0 lead in the first half, stunning the Nigerians at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat. However, the Super Falcons flipped the script in the second half, scoring three goals to emerge victorious and silence the once-bustling home crowd.
Esther Okoronkwo
Esther Okoronkwo finally realised her long-held dream of representing Nigeria at the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), showcasing brilliance and bravery against hosts Morocco in the final at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat. After missing the 2022 edition due to a debilitating ACL injury, the prolific forward returned to the continental stage in Morocco with renewed determination and exceptional poise, playing a pivotal role in leading the Super Falcons to their record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
Currently playing for the Canadian side AFC Toronto, Okoronkwo’s tournament performance was exceptional. Over six matches, she provided six assists and scored a vital goal, demonstrating her composure and class. Her standout moment came in the final against Morocco, where she scored from the penalty spot to ignite Nigeria’s comeback and provided the game-winning assist for the 3-2 victory. Her consistency earned her two Player of the Match awards, garnering admiration from fans and observers across the continent and beyond.
Rasheedat Ajibade
Captain fantastic in every regard, the 25-year-old forward from Osun State was instrumental in inspiring the Super Falcons to a historic achievement in Morocco. From the opening match to the final, she remained resolute, even when the odds appeared to be against her. True to her leadership style, Ajibade displayed relentless determination and embraced each moment without looking back.
A vocal presence on and off the pitch, Ajibade showcased her quality whenever she stepped onto the field. The blue-haired star from Osun poured her heart into the Super Falcons’ ‘Mission X’ campaign, often seen urging her teammates to maintain focus and motivation. When her team needed a spark, she provided it. In whatever role she was assigned, she scanned for spaces, delivered precise passes, and kept Nigeria’s opponents guessing. She exploited the athleticism of her team against their opponents’ weaknesses, dictating the tempo of each match. Ajibade earned three Woman of the Match awards against Botswana, Zambia, and South Africa, contributing a penalty against South Africa’s Andile Dlamini, who had not conceded a goal up until that point. For Ajibade, with two TotalEnergies WAFCON titles and an array of individual awards, this achievement is the stuff of dreams.
Chiamaka Nnadozie
Chiamaka Nnadozie was officially named the Best Goalkeeper of the tournament after a series of commanding performances helped guide the Super Falcons to their 10th continental title. Nnadozie was a cornerstone of Nigeria’s success throughout the competition. From the opening match of the group stage, she demonstrated her quality—organising the back line with authority and making crucial saves at pivotal moments. Her ability to read the game and respond with lightning-fast reflexes was invaluable as the Super Falcons advanced through one of the most competitive editions of the tournament in recent memory.
As Nigeria progressed to the knockout stages, Nnadozie’s influence grew stronger. In the tense semi-final against South Africa, she stood tall under pressure, making critical saves that preserved Nigeria’s lead and secured their place in the final. Her calm presence in goal and vocal leadership played a crucial role in helping the team maintain defensive discipline against top-quality opposition. Her selection as the tournament’s Best Goalkeeper reflects both her brilliance and her significant role in Nigeria’s victory.
Halimatu Ibrahim Ayinde
At the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), the composed Ayinde emerged once again as the heartbeat of the Super Falcons, contributing significantly to the team’s ‘Mission X’ campaign. With every tackle, interception, and line-breaking pass, Ayinde embodies the spirit of a player who plays for more than herself—for her family, her community, and the young girls in the north who now dare to dream because of her.
Nigeria’s unbeaten run to the WAFCON 2024 title was driven not only by talent but also by tactical maturity and emotional cohesion—values Ayinde represents both on and off the pitch.
Michelle Alozie
Michelle Alozie’s long-range strike in stoppage time secured a 2-1 victory over South Africa, propelling Nigeria into the final against Morocco at WAFCON 2024. The Houston Dash striker fired home a winner in second-half stoppage time following Linda Motlhalo’s equalising penalty in the 60th minute, which had cancelled out Rasheedat Ajibade’s opening goal. This victory kept the Super Falcons on course for their 10th Women’s AFCON title. Alozie’s inclusion in the Team of the Tournament highlights her brilliance and critical role in Nigeria’s success.
Ashleigh Plumptre
Ashleigh Plumptre emerged as one of the standout defenders of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, earning her place in the Team of the Group Stage. Known for her calm leadership and timely interceptions, Plumptre was crucial in Nigeria’s record-extending 10th continental crown. “My biggest growth as a player has come from my growth as a person. I don’t feel like I have to prove myself anymore. I just want to be present for the team and give my all,” Plumptre shared with CAFOnline.com.
Born in Leicester, England, Plumptre began her football journey within England’s youth setup, representing the country at U-15, U-17, U-19, and U-23 levels. Her club career included stints at Notts County, LA Galaxy OC, and Leicester City, where she helped secure the FA Women’s Championship title in the 2020/21 season. Ahead of WAFCON 2022, Plumptre made the significant decision to represent Nigeria, embracing her paternal heritage over continuing with England. This bold, heartfelt choice rooted in family and identity has since seen the 27-year-old become a key figure in the Super Falcons, anchoring the defence and stepping up as one of the leaders both on and off the pitch.
Coach Justin Madugu
Super Falcons head coach, Justin Madugu, was recognised as Coach of the Tournament, marking a remarkable campaign in which he led the Super Falcons to their historic 10th continental title. Madugu’s emergence as a standout figure at the tournament signifies a pivotal moment in his coaching career. Reappointed as head coach on an interim basis just months before the competition, the 61-year-old tactician seized his first major opportunity at the helm, delivering silverware and restoring Nigeria’s dominance on the continent.
Before his appointment, Madugu had served twice in an interim capacity under former American head coach Randy Waldrum. He was also an assistant coach during Nigeria’s past three WAFCON appearances, winning the title under Edwin Okon in 2014, reclaiming it with Thomas Dennerby in 2018, and finishing fourth under Waldrum in 2022. In 2024, the Nigeria Football Federation placed its trust in the experienced and homegrown coach, and he delivered.
Relatively unknown on the global stage before WAFCON 2024, the Adamawa-born coach quickly proved his mettle. He adeptly blended experience with youth, along with home-based talent and overseas professionals, building a cohesive and tactically disciplined squad that executed the ‘Mission X’ campaign for Nigeria. Under Madugu’s leadership, the Super Falcons went unbeaten, conceded just one goal throughout the tournament, and displayed dominant performances, including a 5-0 thrashing of Zambia and a hard-fought 2-1 semi-final victory over defending champions South Africa. They sealed the title with a comeback win over hosts Morocco in the final.
Madugu’s tactical acumen, which effectively combined defensive solidity with attacking precision, was fundamental to Nigeria’s successful ‘Mission X’ campaign, culminating in a record-extending 10th WAFCON crown.
