D’Tigress defeated Senegal 75-68 on Saturday to reach the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The win follows D’Tigress’ 83-47 quarterfinal triumph over Cameroon and secures their spot in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Reacting to the hard-fought win, team captain Amy Okonkwo said, “It wasn’t easy. Senegal came prepared, but we stayed locked in.
“Every player gave it their all and we’re proud to wear the green and white.”
Coach Rena Wakama expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “We knew it would be a physical game, but our strategy worked.
“We managed the tempo and stayed disciplined. This team is hungry for the title.”
D’Tigress will now face either Mali or South Sudan in Sunday’s final as they aim for a historic fifth consecutive AfroBasket title.
Nigeria Basketball Federation President, Musa Kida, praised the players, saying, “This team keeps breaking barriers.Their commitment and teamwork are exceptional.
“We are behind them all the way to the final.”
Point guard Elizabeth Balogun, who led with crucial points in the second half, added, “We trusted each other. That’s what kept us going in the fourth quarter when Senegal pushed hard.”
With this win, Nigeria joins Senegal, Mali, and South Sudan as Africa’s representatives for the World Cup qualifiers next year.
