World record holder Tobi Amusan continued her reign in the women’s 100m hurdles, clinching her fifth national title at the 2025 Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) National Trials held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos.
The 28-year-old star blazed through the race with a time of 12.57 seconds, showcasing her signature speed and precision.
Adaobi Tabugbo secured second place with 13.03 seconds, while Faith Osamuyi rounded out the podium with 13.36 seconds.
Amusan’s victory solidifies her dominance as she gears up for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September.
The trials also saw thrilling performances in other events. In the men’s 400m final, Gafar Badmus claimed the top spot with a time of 45.71 seconds, outpacing Ezekiel Asuquo (46.29 seconds) and David Akhalu (46.91 seconds) for first place.
The women’s 400m delivered a shock when veteran Patience Okon-George was disqualified, paving the way for African U-20 champion Favour Onyah to seize victory in 52.69 seconds.
Opeyemi Deborah Oke and Anita Enaruna followed in second and third places, respectively.
In the women’s 100m, African U-20 champion Chioma Nweke stunned spectators by dethroning Olayinka Olajide to claim her first national title with a time of 11.27 seconds.
Olajide settled for second in 11.39 seconds, while Iyanuoluwa Bada took third in 11.45 seconds. The 2025 AFN National Trials highlighted Nigeria’s depth of talent, setting the stage for an exciting international season.
