The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticised presidential hopeful Peter Obi for pledging to serve only one term if elected in the 2027 general election.

On Tuesday, PDP Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor said Obi’s one-term pledge contradicts the 1999 Constitution, which permits two four-year presidential terms.

“The Constitution explicitly states that one is eligible for an eight-year tenure. Committing to just one term… is neither fashionable nor something that should be encouraged,”

Osadolor argued that such symbolic pledges undermine the democratic process and distract from the more pressing issues of leadership capacity and national unity.

“I don’t believe such statements have a place in a democracy,” he said.

He accused Obi of trying to “emotionally hoodwink” voters instead of campaigning on clear plans and competence.

“If you’re running on the basis of capacity, competence, and unity, then say so and let the people vote for you based on those merits,” Osadolor added.

The PDP youth leader insisted that Nigeria does not need token promises but a capable leader who can address the country’s challenges.

“What Nigeria needs now is a true healer, a leader, and an administrator who can guide us out of the current quagmire we find ourselves in,” he stressed.
