The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has expressed confidence that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will reaffirm its dominance in the state in the forthcoming by-election in Ibadan North Federal Constituency.
This is as the Governor expressed optimism that the party’s candidate, Folajimi Oyekunle, will secure victory at the polls.
Naija News reports that Makinde gave this assurance on Monday at Bodija Market, Ibadan, during the official flag-off of the PDP campaign and the presentation of the party’s flag to Oyekunle ahead of the August 16 by-election.
The governor described the PDP candidate as “trusted, competent and the best man to represent the constituency” in the House of Representatives.
Makinde also thanked the people of Oyo State for their continued support since the beginning of his administration.
“I want to appreciate the people of Oyo State for standing by us. I urge all eligible voters in Ibadan North Federal Constituency to come out en masse and exercise their franchise on August 16,” he said.
Earlier in his remark, the Director-General of the Folajimi Oyekunle Campaign Organisation, Ademola Omotosho, called on constituents to vote massively for the PDP candidate.
“We are appealing to every voter in Ibadan North to troop out in large numbers on election day and ensure victory for the PDP,” Omotosho stated.
Meanwhile, Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has described the ongoing campaign for the 2027 general elections as totally illegal.
Speaking on Channels Television Programme, ‘Politics Today’ on Monday, the outspoken SAN urged the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) to draw the attention of politicians to the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022.
He said: “As far as the Electoral Act, 2022 is concerned, the ongoing election campaign is illegal. Totally illegal. It’s also diversionary. Because what Nigerians expect now, what the law provides is governance of the country without disruption.
“So it’s not time yet to campaign. And I do hope that INEC would draw the attention of politicians, including the government, including those who constitute the government, to deliver provisions of the electoral act. There is no provision yet. There is no room yet for campaigning in Nigeria.
“Two years ahead of the election. It’s not part of our law. If the people in power want to amend the law, that should be done. I will say that. And the media must help Nigeria, particularly when it’s time to campaign. We must take politicians out of the cocoon of ethnicity, religion and other primordial considerations.
“We must address the problems that are confronting our people. If you say you want to replace those who are in power, what is your solution? The electricity crisis, crisis in the education system, bad roads and other problems are confronting Nigeria as a nation.
“What do you want to do there? For those who are in power, you have to consult with the people. Confide in local governments in the country. Local governments that are known to the people. We must ensure that this country is run on the basis of the rule of law. That’s not what is going on now.”
