The home‑based Super Eagles recorded a disappointing 1-0 loss in their opening fixture at the 2024 African Nations Championship on Tuesday.
Naija News reports that ahead of the game, expectations were high as the two West African countries were out to prove a point.
The Eagles, as a powerhouse in African football, and amidst recent successes recorded by the Super Falcons, went into the match against CHAN defending champions, Senegal, with high hopes.
However, both teams struggled to gain control in the opening minutes, with Nigeria edging possession.
The first half ended goalless, and it was Senegal who took the lead through Christian Kobi in the 74th minute of the game following a defensive error from the Nigerians, and that was how the match ended.
The CHAN Eagles will face Sudan in their second Group D game at the Amman Stadium, Zanzibar, next Tuesday.
Earlier, Congo held Sudan to a 1‑1 draw in the other Group D fixture, meaning Nigeria are currently rooted at the bottom of the table.
In other news, Bendel Insurance have released 25 players from their squad ahead of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.
