The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, took a swipe at Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, during a function in Edo State, referencing Obi’s recent viral moment of serving food at a charity event in Imo State.
Wike, speaking at the commissioning of the New Edo Line, sarcastically remarked,
“How long will you be serving the food as a presidential candidate?” while addressing Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo.
Wike further noted that when he was governor of Rivers State, Obi notified him before visiting, questioning whether Obi served food during his tenure as Anambra State governor.
The comment was a pointed jab at Obi’s participation in the “Jubilee of Hope” event, where he was seen serving food to underprivileged attendees, an act that sparked mixed reactions online.
Obi defended his actions, stating the event was a private Catholic charity initiative to promote empathy and service, not a political stunt, and that he served because attendees requested it.
Wike’s remarks, made in the presence of Governor Okpebholo, also aligned with the governor’s recent controversial statement that Obi should seek security clearance before visiting Edo State, citing security concerns following Obi’s donation of ₦15 million to a nursing school in Benin City.
The exchange highlights ongoing political tensions, with Wike’s remarks drawing attention on social media, where some viewed it as an attempt to undermine Obi’s public image ahead of the 2027 elections.
