WAFCON Final: Ghana Coach Backs Super Falcons To Defeat Morocco

Head coach of Ghana’s Black Queens, Kim Lars Björkegren, has tipped Nigeria’s Super Falcons to beat hosts Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Björkegren, whose side lost 3-1 to Nigeria in a pre-tournament friendly, believes the Super Falcons have the quality to secure victory in Saturday’s WAFCON final.

“I think it’s going to be an interesting game, both teams are a little different, but I think there is potential and more quality in Nigeria,” the Swedish coach said.

Nigeria are the most successful team in the history of the competition with nine titles and will be aiming to add a tenth when they face the Atlas Lionesses in Rabat at 9 p.m. tonight.

Meanwhile, Ghana secured third place at the tournament after a 4-2 penalty shootout win over South Africa in the bronze medal match. The game ended 1-1 in regulation time.

Nonhlanhla Mthandi gave South Africa the lead after capitalising on a defensive error, but the Black Queens equalised through an own goal by goalkeeper Andile Dlamini in the second half.

There was no extra time played, and the match went straight to penalties. Ghana emerged victorious after Holweni and Magaia missed their spot-kicks for South Africa.
