A coalition of youth leaders from the North, under the Northern Ethnic Youth Group Assembly (NEYGA), has firmly rejected former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal’s recent declaration that the North has endorsed the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Describing the claim as a “shameless fabrication” and a “desperate political gambit,” NEYGA criticized the move as unrepresentative and misleading, asserting that it does not reflect the collective will of Northern stakeholders.

In a strongly worded statement signed by the group’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Dan-Musa, and issued on Sunday, NEYGA described the Abuja declaration as nothing more than political theatre designed to deceive Nigerians.

“The North is not a political pawn to be manipulated by a select few. Any decision of this magnitude must involve broad-based consultations with traditional rulers, youth leaders, and stakeholders—not a clandestine meeting of political jobbers,” Dan-Musa stated.

He accused those behind the announcement of misrepresenting the North for selfish reasons, alleging that the gathering was merely “a gathering of Atiku loyalists masquerading as Northern representatives.” The group warned the public to disregard what it called “a fraudulent and undemocratic proclamation.”

NEYGA did not hold back in criticizing Babachir Lawal directly, accusing him and his allies of “exploiting Northern unity for personal vendettas.”

“Many now posing as regional champions had failed the North woefully while in power. We know the true patriots from the opportunists.”

The group further stated that the North would not be misled by individuals seeking to advance personal ambitions under the guise of regional consensus.

“The North will not be railroaded into another political misadventure by those who see our region as a mere stepping stone to power,” the statement said.

As the political climate intensifies ahead of the 2027 elections, NEYGA urged Northern citizens to be vigilant and to reject what it called “political merchants peddling false consensus.”

“The North is awake, and we will not be fooled again,” the statement concluded.

The development signals rising tensions within Northern political circles, as key stakeholders begin to position themselves ahead of what is expected to be a fiercely contested electoral season.
