What Dankwambo Said About Leah Sharibu As She Turns 16

Former Governor of Gombe State and Senator representing Gombe North, Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, has stated that former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, remains a prominent political leader in northern Nigeria, despite his recent defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking at an expanded stakeholders’ meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Gombe, Dankwambo described Atiku, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, as a highly respected figure whose status is not diminished by his change of party affiliation.

“It’s time to rebuild our party. Today, it’s not about contesting elections. But we have leaders we recognise. In the north, Atiku Abubakar is our leader. We love and like him and, by virtue of his position as a former vice president, he remains our leader whether he is in PDP or ADC,” Dankwambo said.

Dankwambo urged PDP members to prioritise rebuilding and repositioning the party ahead of the 2027 general elections rather than prematurely declaring interest in political offices.

“We are not talking about contests now. All we are after is to rebuild our party and position it for victory. All those wishing to contest should wait. Let’s build the party first,” he cautioned.

The senator reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to internal democracy, noting that it remains the only party that has successfully conducted congresses across all levels.

“PDP remains the only party that has held its congress from the ward level, to the local government, to the state and zonal levels, and is currently working to hold the national convention,” he stated.

Earlier, Ali Isa JC, the member representing Balanga/Billiri Federal Constituency, disclosed that the PDP had resolved its internal crisis and fixed its national convention for Ibadan, Oyo State.

He added that the party leadership had engaged senior lawyers to challenge defectors who won elections on the PDP platform but later decamped.
