Just In: APC Extends Tenure Of Ward, Local Government, And State Executive Committees

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded to Monday’s protest by party members, who demanded the removal of its state chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, stating that it acknowledges and respects members’ rights to express grievances democratically.

Naija News earlier reported that APC members from all 57 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly, demanding Ojelabi’s ouster over alleged plans to impose appointees across the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 LCDAs of the state.

The protesters, carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Ojelabi Must Go” and “We Want Fresh Leadership,” accused party leaders of sidelining grassroots voices in decision-making.

In a statement issued on Monday, APC spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, said the party welcomes civic engagement as long as it is peaceful.

“Peaceful protests are a legitimate feature of civic engagement, and we commend those who have conducted themselves calmly and orderly,” Oladejo said.

Oladejo assured members that the selection of cabinet members for LGAs and LCDAs would not be arbitrary but would strictly follow laid-down rules, internal party guidelines, and recommendations by local party leadership after proper consultations.

He said, “Please note that the party at the state level only plays an advisory role. The party hereby vehemently denies any allegation to impose nomination on any local government.

“We want to advise interested members to approach their local leadership, who are the custodians of the power to nominate.

“We remain committed to constructive dialogue to review concerns and disputes to ensure fair outcomes in line with party values.

“We appeal for constructive participation and plead with the protesters to channel their concerns through official party organs.”
