Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Nasir Idris, has announced the distribution of ₦2.7 billion worth of exercise books to primary and secondary schools across the state, as part of efforts to strengthen the education sector.
The governor made the announcement during the opening session of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) held in Birnin Kebbi.
Governor Idris, a former unionist himself, said his administration has also increased the budget for school feeding from ₦175 million to ₦300 million, while continuing major renovation and construction of classrooms statewide. He further revealed that 2,000 qualified teachers were recently employed to address staffing shortages, alongside the implementation of the minimum wage for all teachers, ensuring their welfare is prioritized.
“As a former teacher and union member, I remain committed to uplifting the teaching profession and supporting quality education in Kebbi,” Governor Idris said, assuring the NUT of his continued backing.
Speaking at the gathering, National President of the NUT, Comrade Audu Amba, said the union chose Kebbi State for its NEC meeting to honour Governor Idris, whom he described as a leader who understands the needs of teachers.
“The transformation we’re witnessing in Kebbi’s education sector is commendable. This administration has set a clear example of what leadership rooted in education looks like,” Amba said.
Comrade Usman S. Gogo, acting Chairman of the NUT in Kebbi State, echoed the President’s remarks, noting that the state’s education landscape has seen significant improvement since the governor assumed office.
“Teachers in Kebbi are proud of the governor’s commitment. We’ll continue to support this administration for the sake of our learners and our profession,” Gogo said.
