Colombian forward, Luis Diaz says his departure from Liverpool would have been the “perfect goodbye” if not for the tragic death of teammate Diogo Jota earlier this month.
Luis Diaz has completed a £65.5 million move to Bayern Munich, ending a successful three-and-a-half-year spell at Anfield.
But in an emotional farewell message, Diaz admitted that the passing of Jota cast a dark cloud over what should have been a proud moment in his career.
“It would have been the perfect goodbye if we hadn’t lost one of ours in such a tragic way,” Diaz wrote on Instagram.
“I carry everyone with me in my heart, but one of them in particular: Diogo. I will never forget him. We will never forget him. Thank you for everything.”
Diaz was omitted from Liverpool’s pre-season game against AC Milan on Saturday amid reports of Bayern’s interest. The German champions had an initial £58.6 million offer rejected before returning with an improved bid of £65.5 million, which Liverpool accepted.
The 28-year-old has signed a four-year contract with Bayern Munich.
Reflecting on his time with the Reds, Diaz said he was leaving “with the feeling of a duty fulfilled” after winning four major trophies, including the Premier League title last season.
“I arrived with all the dreams in the world, and I am leaving proud of everything we achieved together,” he said.
“I have met incredible people, fabulous colleagues, coaches who helped me a lot, and extraordinary fans. Liverpool is, indeed, a special team, and I will keep everyone in my heart.”
Diaz joined Liverpool from Porto in January 2022 for an initial £37 million and went on to score 41 goals in 148 appearances.
He was part of the squad that won the FA Cup and EFL Cup in his first season and featured in the 2022 UEFA Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.
Last season was the most productive of his career, netting 17 goals in all competitions.
