The National Sports Federation (NSF) elections have been rescheduled for the first week of October, following a strategic review by the National Sports Commission (NSC).
This marks a shift from the earlier September timetable and introduces a structured two-stage electoral framework for the National Sports Federation elections.
According to Punch, sources close to Tuesday’s marathon meeting at the NSC headquarters in Abuja revealed that the commission agreed to push the general elections to October to accommodate zonal elections at the end of September. These zonal polls will serve as the preliminary phase, filtering candidates for the national-level vote.
“The Commission will conduct all elections directly. No external party is permitted to organise any aspect of the process,” an NSC official told Punch.
Originally, the 2025 NSF Board Elections were scheduled to run from September 1 to 15 at the MKO Abiola National Stadium. However, the updated timeline introduces a more methodical sequence, with zonal elections preceding the Abuja finals.
According to official NSC guidelines, the revamped election format is designed to reflect international best practices, prioritising transparency, integrity, and good governance within Nigeria’s sports federations.
The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) will serve as an independent observer, tasked with monitoring proceedings to ensure fairness and legitimacy.
The electoral framework, as released by the NSC, includes comprehensive provisions covering everything from board composition and eligibility criteria to regulations on petitions, appeals, and the final inauguration of elected officials.
In a message to aspirants and stakeholders, the Commission stated: “Only individuals who are credible, qualified, and truly passionate about Nigerian sports will be considered for board positions. Strict adherence to all rules and deadlines is non-negotiable.”
The NSC has urged all stakeholders to familiarise themselves with the updated procedures and timelines, calling for maximum cooperation to ensure the process remains transparent and devoid of controversy.
