A senior officer of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, CSP Ebong Thompson, has been commended for rejecting a N800,000 bribe offered to secure the release of a suspected armed robber and suppress evidence of the crime.
The incident, which underscores the officer’s integrity, took place on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, according to the command’s spokesperson, Timfon John.
In a statement, John disclosed that the prime suspect, 53-year-old David Samuel Isaac, was arrested after a Samsung smartphone, stolen at gunpoint, was traced back to him.
Investigations revealed Isaac as a repeat offender with a prior arrest and court charge for a similar crime in 2024. Despite his previous encounter with the law, Isaac allegedly resumed criminal activities shortly after his release.
The second suspect, Emmanuel Mendie Peter, was apprehended at the SWAT office while attempting to bribe CSP Thompson with N800,000 to facilitate Isaac’s release and cover up the crime.
The officer’s refusal to accept the bribe led to Peter’s immediate arrest, further strengthening the case against both suspects.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to upholding justice and combating crime, praising CSP Thompson’s professionalism as an example for others.
Both suspects are currently in custody, and investigations are ongoing to ensure they face the full weight of the law.
