Labour Party has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of unlawfully excluding its candidates from the August 16 bye-elections.

Labour Party, in a statement on Saturday by its spokesman Obiora Ifoh, condemned INEC’s action as shocking, unlawful, and a misuse of authority.

The party insisted that INEC lacks the constitutional power to stop it from fielding candidates in any election.

“The party is also aware that the INEC has no powers to either stop it from sponsoring candidates nor cherry-pick elections where it deems fit for our party to field candidates,” Ifoh said.

He added that no court in Nigeria, including the Supreme Court, has derecognised the party’s leadership.

“The Supreme Court, in its wisdom, ruled that parties should resolve their problems internally. At no point did the Supreme Court empower INEC to interfere with the internal matters of the political party,” he added.

The party warned that excluding its candidates could lead to legal consequences and wastage of public resources.

“It will indeed be catastrophic, and a colossal loss of scarce monetary resources should INEC have its way,” Ifoh warned.

Labour Party Chairman, Julius Abure, urged members to stay calm, assuring them that legal steps were being taken.

“We are calling on all our candidates to remain calm, as the party will do everything possible to ensure their names are uploaded for the August 16 bye-election,” he said.
