The Federal Government has downplayed speculations that a potential alliance between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi could pose a significant threat to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

Speaking during a political affairs programme on Sunday, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, described the alliance as “an unfruitful adventure.”

He stressed that such moves were based on outdated and ineffective political strategies.

Keyamo, a senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), dismissed the prospects of any opposition merger unseating the Tinubu administration, maintaining that Nigerians were already familiar with what he termed the “419 tactics” employed by some political actors.

According to him, such methods had lost their potency and would no longer sway the electorate.

“They know us very well, and we also know them very well. We are not strangers to each other.

“Some of these tactics they are using are what I call 419 tactics. These tactics have expired,” he said.

He further criticised the African Democratic Congress (ADC), accusing it of engaging in deceptive political manoeuvres that are unlikely to succeed in the long term.

Taking a direct jab at an unnamed opposition figure, Keyamo accused the individual of hypocrisy.

He alleged that the person in question flaunted wealth while claiming to represent the masses.

“One of them is busy disgracing wealth every day, putting 500 cars in his garage and telling Nigerians he wants to rescue them,” he said.

Keyamo argued that the focus of public discourse should be on whether the Tinubu administration is getting the fundamentals of the economy right.

“The answer is a resounding yes,” he asserted, citing improvements in key economic indicators such as steady foreign reserves, rising government revenue, and a stabilising exchange rate.

“These are indices of a healthy economy. It is the trickle-down effect that will finally free up spaces for jobs and put money in the pockets of Nigerians,” he explained.
