Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno reaffirmed that his predecessor, Udom Emmanuel, remains his political godfather despite his recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking during a pro-APC rally in the Eket area of the state on Mond Udom Emmanuelay, Eno addressed rumours of a rift between himself and Emmanuel, who handed over power to him in 2023 after completing his tenure as governor.

Eno, who left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC in June, described Emmanuel as his “political father” and insisted there was no fallout between them.

“Let me make it abundantly clear that there is no issue between me and my political father, former governor Udom Emmanuel. There is no issue whatsoever,” he declared.

He emphasised that their relationship remains intact and that his decision to switch parties was in the best interest of the state, particularly to attract attention from President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“I visit him, I talk with him, and we are still together. I am his political son. He brought me out to run for governor. And so, he will always earn our respect, our support, and I’d like to make that assurance.”

Defending his move to the APC, the governor added: “I moved to the All Progressives Congress not out of betrayal, but to align Akwa Ibom with the centre. It is a strategic decision for the good of our people.”
