Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, says he was cautioned by his wife not to speak ill of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari after his passing in early July 2025.

Fayose made this revelation on Friday, while appearing on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme. Known for his long-standing criticism of Buhari’s administration, Fayose admitted he was initially tempted to publicly condemn the late leader.

“When President Buhari died, I wanted to come out and abuse him,” he said. “But my wife called me not to say so. She said, ‘Let the dead be; don’t speak ill of him.’”

Despite showing restraint, Fayose maintained his disapproval of Buhari’s leadership. “Would you say Buhari performed? I’m not among those praising the dead. Don’t honour me when I die. When I die, I’m gone,” he stated firmly.

He contrasted Buhari with President Bola Tinubu, describing the current leader as more open and willing to engage.

“He Tinubu is accessible. Was the former president accessible?” Fayose asked.

“A lot of things happened in those days, but do you still find them in the system? He is not a perfect man, but we are not where we were.”

Fayose also defended Tinubu against rising criticism over the economy, saying: “Nigeria is a sick country; it will take heaven to pull it out at once. What miracle can anybody do in two years? Tinubu inherited a very bad economy.”

The former governor concluded that while Buhari’s death deserves sympathy, it should not erase the truth of his record.
