The Zamfara State Government has defended its controversial decision to deploy vigilantes from Borno State to help combat banditry, saying the move was driven by a desperate need to boost security in the region.
Speaking on Friday, Hon. Iliyasu Buhari Maijega, Special Adviser on Political Matters to Governor Dauda Lawal, said the measure was never intended to sideline local forces but to enhance their efforts.
“This administration has remained steadfast in its commitment to restoring peace since day one,” Maijega stated during a press briefing on the state’s worsening insecurity.
He explained that Governor Lawal has been in constant contact with federal security agencies.
“Just a few days after assuming office, Governor Dauda Lawal met with security heads in Abuja.

“I can confirm he has visited them six times so far, all in a bid to find lasting solutions to the security crisis,” he noted.
Maijega clarified that the vigilantes from Borno are working alongside the state’s Community Protection Guards (CPGs), not replacing them.
“What Zamfara needs most is security,” he added, while calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to fulfil his pledge to end banditry by December 2025.
Turning to politics, Maijega warned opposition parties against electoral malpractice ahead of the Kaura Namoda South constituency by-election.
“Anyone planning to manipulate the election through vote buying will be put to shame,” he declared.
He expressed confidence that the ruling PDP would retain the seat, citing recent progress in infrastructure and healthcare as evidence of Governor Lawal’s commitment to the people.
