Minister of Works, David Umahi, has dismissed claims by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso that President Bola Tinubu is marginalising the North in road infrastructure projects.
Describing the claim as “false, misleading, and self-serving,” Umahi, in a statement on Friday, insisted that President Tinubu is committed to developing every part of Nigeria with fairness and equity.
“As the Minister of Works, I have verified facts and figures. The projects are well spread. The North has 52 percent, the South has 48 percent. So the claim of marginalisation is baseless,” Umahi said.
He listed four of Tinubu’s legacy projects: the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway (South), Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway (North), Trans-Sahara Road in Ebonyi (South), and Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe Road (North).
He further stated, “Anyone who says the North is being marginalised under this administration is not speaking based on facts. We are constructing roads worth hundreds of billions of naira across northern states.”
Highlighting ongoing projects, Umahi said, “The Sokoto-Zamfara-Katsina-Kaduna Road alone is a 275 km dual carriageway costing ₦824 billion. Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Road is 350 km at ₦764 billion. These are massive investments in the North.”
He also mentioned key southern projects including the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Lagos-Sagamu-Oyo-Ilorin Road, and repairs on Third Mainland Bridge, Carter Bridge, and Eko Bridge.
“The South is also receiving attention. No region is left behind. We are balancing development based on need, traffic volume, and economic impact,” he said.
Umahi assured that a detailed breakdown of ongoing projects above ₦20 billion would be released next week to further dispel misinformation.
