Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s inability to provide credible leadership and effectively tackle the pressing challenges facing Nigeria.

In a letter posted Tuesday on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Melaye announced his immediate withdrawal from all levels of party engagement, marking a significant development in the nation’s political landscape.

“I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party at all levels of involvement,” the letter reads.

“This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation.”

Melaye, who was the PDP’s governorship candidate in the 2023 Kogi State election, said his exit followed a period of “careful reflection” on the party’s direction and current state.

“Having carefully reflected on the state of the party, I can no longer in good conscience participate in its activities or lend my support to its agenda,” he added.

He described his resignation as a total and formal disengagement from all party structures, with immediate effect.

“Please consider this as my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at all levels with immediate effect.”

While expressing appreciation for the platform PDP once offered him, Melaye emphasized that his political mission remains intact.

“Thank you for the opportunity to serve under the platform during my period of membership,” he concluded.

Fallout and Political Speculation

Melaye’s resignation is widely viewed as another major blow to the PDP, coming shortly after reports of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s quiet disengagement from active party affairs, fueling speculation of a broader crisis within the main opposition party.

Although Melaye did not immediately declare his next political move, sources close to the former lawmaker suggest he may align with a new coalition or movement ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He has, however, vowed to continue his advocacy for justice, equity, and national development, stressing that his political ideals remain unchanged despite his departure from the PDP.
