Renowned Nigerian music video director Clarence Peters has shared that he forgave his father, legendary Afro-Juju musician Shina Peters, long before they ever spoke about their strained relationship.

The award-winning director made the disclosure during a recent episode of the Afropolitan podcast, where he reflected on the personal transformation that led him to that point.

According to him, he came to terms with the fact that he had made many of the same mistakes his father made, and that realisation changed everything.

In his words: “I made every single mistake my father made. I’m just lucky that time and tech saved me from it being as catastrophic as his own. So, the moment I realised that I forgave him instantly even before we had a conversation. That would be 2014/15. That was when I became an adult. That was when I began my journey into adulthood. I’m still on the journey. You’re always on the journey.”

Peters, now 41, is the son of Nollywood actress Clarion Chukwura and Shina Peters. Despite coming from a family of entertainers, his childhood was marked by emotional complexity.

He has previously opened up about the emotional distance between his parents and how it shaped his own outlook on life and relationships.

In a February 2025 chat with Chude Jideonwo, the music video director admitted he once struggled with judging his father for how he treated his mother.

“I would have loved to judge my dad for how he treated my mother but I’m not in a position to,” he said.

He also confessed to trying to avoid repeating his father’s shortcomings in his own relationships, though he acknowledged that he still has flaws.

“I tried not to be like my father with women… but I’m not perfect,” he added.

Clarence has also revealed in the past that his mother once contemplated aborting him during pregnancy. However, she eventually changed her mind, believing that he was the reincarnation of her late father, who passed away when she was just 11.
