Renowned Nigerian music video director, Clarence Peters, has opened up about his relationship with his father, legendary Afro-Juju musician Shina Peters, revealing that he forgave him even before they had a proper conversation—after realizing he had made the same life mistakes.
In a recent episode of the Afropolitan Podcast, Clarence Peters shared that the breakthrough moment happened around 2014/2015, marking what he described as the beginning of his journey into adulthood.
“I made every single mistake my father made. I’m just lucky that time and tech saved me from it being as catastrophic as his own,” he said. “So, the moment I realised that, I forgave him instantly even before we had a conversation. That was when I became an adult. That was when I began my journey into adulthood. I’m still on the journey. You’re always on the journey.”
The 41-year-old, known for his visually iconic music videos, is the son of Shina Peters and veteran Nollywood actress Clarion Chukwura.
In a previous interview, Peters revealed that his mother once considered aborting him during pregnancy but later changed her mind, believing he was the reincarnation of her late father who died when she was 11.
Earlier this year, in a February 2025 interview with Chude Jideonwo, Clarence Peters expressed that while he had once wished to judge his father for how he treated his mother, he no longer sees himself as fit to do so.
“I would have loved to judge my dad for how he treated my mother, but I’m not in a position to,” he said.
He also admitted that despite his efforts not to emulate his father’s relationship patterns, he is far from perfect when it comes to women.
Clarence Peters remains one of Nigeria’s most influential music video directors, known for his introspective nature and bold visual storytelling.
