Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, today announced a ₦1 billion donation to support victims of recent floods and other disasters in Mokwa, Niger State.

The donation, channeled through her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), aims to provide relief to communities devastated by floods, fire outbreaks, boat accidents, and banditry attacks in the state.

The announcement was made during a condolence visit to Minna on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, where she was joined by the wives of governors from Nasarawa, Taraba, Bayelsa, Ogun, Gombe, Oyo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, and Ekiti states, as well as wives of senators and security chiefs.

Speaking at the event, Mrs. Tinubu described the disasters as deeply touching, expressing solidarity with the affected families.

“These are challenging times, but I pray Almighty God comforts the bereaved, heals the injured, and strengthens all those affected,” she said.

She highlighted the donation’s role in aiding recovery efforts, including rebuilding homes and supporting livelihoods.

The First Lady also commended the Federal Government’s swift response in releasing funds and relief materials, urging Nigerians to show compassion and unity in supporting those in need.

The visit also marked the formal launch of the Renewed Hope Initiative in Niger State, in partnership with the Tony Elumelu Foundation, with 500 individuals set to receive economic support and empowerment.

Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, who received the First Lady, expressed gratitude for the donation and the Federal Government’s earlier ₦2 billion intervention for Mokwa flood victims.

He assured that the funds would be judiciously distributed to support resettlement and recovery efforts.

The floods in Mokwa, which began on May 29, 2025, claimed over 100 lives, displaced thousands, and destroyed homes and infrastructure.

The First Lady’s donation is part of a broader effort to address the humanitarian crisis, complementing contributions from the state government and other prominent Nigerians.
